August Classic Book Club meeting

Coco's Restaurant (map)

Selected By: Kati

This is the meetup for the Classic Book Club, an offshoot of the regular South Orange County Women's Book Club that meets monthly and reads only classics. Anyone is welcome.

For August we will be reading The Awakening by Kate Chopin (by popular demand from the poll).

The Awakening tells the story of Edna Pontellier and the changes that occur in her thinking and lifestyle as the result of a summer romance.

From Amazon review: Kate Chopin's "The Awakening" is the classic novel about women that "Madame Bovary" purports to be but isn't. It's not just a "woman's" novel, though, it perfectly (and poetically) captures the inner life of a solitary person who is forced to live for the sake of others.

Please come prepared to discuss the book. You may come earlier to order food and hang out, but we will officially start at 7 pm. Some people always end up ordering food during the event, but it is not required.

Interesting and varied interpretations on this classic book; which makes for a lively discussion. Can't wait to see what books we select for the next few months!

Great discussion. Some liked the book, others didn't, but it didn't matter. What was interesting was how a few women closely identified with the character, Edna, on one level or another.
