SUMMARY:August Classic Book Club meeting
DESCRIPTION:South Orange County Women's Book Club\n\nThis is the meetup for
the Classic Book Club\, an offshoot of the regular South Orange County Wom
en's Book Club that meets monthly and reads only classics. Anyone is welcom
 e. For August we will be reading The Awakening by Kate Chopin (by popular
demand from the poll). The Awakening tells the story of Edna Pontellier an
d the changes that occur in her thinking and lifestyle as the result of a s
ummer romance. From Amazon review: Kate Chopin's "The Awakening" is the cl
assic novel about women that "Madame Bovary" purports to be but isn't. It's
not just a "woman's" novel\, though\, it perfectly (and poetically) captur
es the inner life of a solitary person who is forced to live for the sake o
f others. Please come prepared to discuss the book. You may come earlier t
o order food and hang out\, but we will officially start at 7 pm. Some peop
le always end up ordering food during the event\, but it is not required. \

SUMMARY:SOCWBC August Read- The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
DESCRIPTION:South Orange County Women's Book Club\n\nThe Best Seller select
ed for our August read is The Lovely Bones by Alice Seabold. I read this b
ook several years ago and really enjoyed it. The topic is dark\, but I did
n't think the book overall was dark. I look forward to hearing what every
one else thinks. The Amazon.com Review: On her way home from school on
a snowy December day in 1973\, 14-year-old Susie Salmon ("like the fish")
is lured into a makeshift underground den in a cornfield and brutally raped
and murdered\, the latest victim of a serial killer--the man she knew as h
er neighbor\, Mr. Harvey. Alice Sebold's haunting and heartbreaking debut
novel\, The Lovely Bones\, unfolds from heaven\, where "life is a perpetual
yesterday" and where Susie narrates and keeps watch over her grieving fami
ly and friends\, as well as her brazen killer and the sad detective working
on her case. As Sebold fashions it\, everyone has his or her own version o
f heaven. Susie's resembles the athletic fields and landscape of a suburban
high school: a heaven of her "simplest dreams\," where "there were no teac
hers.... We never had to go inside except for art class.... The boys did no
t pinch our backsides or tell us we smelled\; our textbooks were Seventeen
and Glamour and Vogue." The Lovely Bones works as an odd yet affecting co
ming-of-age story. Susie struggles to accept her death while still clinging
to the lost world of the living\, following her family's dramas over the y
ears like an episode of My So-Called Afterlife. Her family disintegrates in
their grief: her father becomes determined to find her killer\, her mother
withdraws\, her little brother Buckley attempts to make sense of the new h
ole in his family\, and her younger sister Lindsey moves through the milest
one events of her teenage and young adult years with Susie riding spiritual
shotgun. Random acts and missed opportunities run throughout the book--Sus
ie recalls her sole kiss with a boy on Earth as "like an accident--a beauti
ful gasoline rainbow." Though sentimental at times\, The Lovely Bones is a
moving exploration of loss and mourning that ultimately puts its faith in t
he living and that is made even more powerful by a cast of convincing chara
cters. Sebold orchestrates a big finish\, and though things tend to wrap up
a little too well for everyone in the end\, one can only imagine (or hope)
that heaven is indeed a place filled with such happy endings. --Brad Thoma

SUMMARY:SOCWBC October Read- The Shining by Stephen King
DESCRIPTION:South Orange County Women's Book Club\n\nFor October we stepped
out of our comfort zone and will read Stephen King's The Shining. Orig
inally published in 1978\, "he Shining truly established King as a modern m
aster of horror and an unequaled purveyor of a literary mirror into pop cul
ture. If you've only seen the original movie starring Jack Nicholson\, you
really owe it to yourself to read the novel\; Stanley Kubrick made a fine a
nd scary movie\, but he did not capture the essence of King's story\, and h
is dramatization followed a different path than what you find in the origin
al vision brought to life through the words of King." Amazon.com Reader Rev
