Welcome to the New Year!

Please join us for the discussion of "The Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood.

The Handmaid's Tale is set in the Republic of Gilead, a ficticious country formed within the borders of what was formerly the United States of America by a racist, chauvinist, nativist, theocratic-organized military coup.

Beginning with a staged terrorist attack killing the President and ousting Congress, the coup leaders launched a revolution which overthrew the United States government and abolished the US Constitution.

The new theocratic military dictatorship, styled "The Republic of Gilead", moved quickly to consolidate its power and reorganize society along a new militarized, hierarchical, compulsorily-Christian regime of Old Testament-inspired social and religious orthodoxy among its newly-created social classes.

Wow....does this sound like fun or what!

The meeting starts at 7:00, but a couple of women get there a bit earlier to eat and talk. People arriving at 7:00 can still order dinner, tea, dessert etc.........

Hope you will join us!

I enjoyed meeting the new women tha attended and overall it was a good meeting. I was disapointed that we didn't get our regular table. We were spread out a bit far from each other, and it made it difficult to hear what everyone was saying. As usual, there were a wide range of responses to the book, and there were some interesting observations and opinions.

Sorry I missed the meeting. I thought it was at the Panera Bakery in Lake Forest. I went there by mistake.

Mostly, this book focuses on the day to day life of what is called a handmaid in a wealthy household. As the story unfolds, the reader learns more and more about the handmaid her function and the dangerous world that keeps her feeling entrapped.

I thought it was fun. The comments are interesting, whether or not we agree.
    •  I think that since I had suggested this book, I may have a biased point of view. There was a great turnout for this book, and whether each woman actually liked it or whether she didn't, they all finished it, and had something impassioned to say about it - for better or for worse. I like that there were so many points of view on this book. Everyone in the group had an opportunity to share their point of view.

We had a very riveting and robust disussion about the very disturbing -"Handmaids Tale." It was great to have a lot of very diverse opinions about the book. The author would be proud to know that this book affects everyone-passionately-one way or the other! Robyn
